We can proudly say we are no strangers to getting national and international awards, but sometimes its the small, humble things, by people with lesser means, dimmer spotlights, that really win our heart.
Over the years we occasionally receive messages and emails from the game communities that like our work and search online for Locsmiths for a simple hi and thanks, keep up the good work, etc, that kind of stuff. It always warms our hearts to know the players are genuinely appreciating our work and get excited about terms and options we use for that particular game lingo.
Robert (https://lnkd.in/eK5xwxca) is one of these persons, spearheading the Plants vs. Zombies community in Brazil https://x.com/platamal. For those who dont know, we handled the portuguese side of that franchise for EA for over a decade, up until Battle for Neighborville.
We had a really nice back and forth about the thought process of some of those names. It's always nice to see the players sort of amazed and amused by the amount of thinking, and sometimes filled with layers, that goes into these games with a lot of made up stuff, especially in comedy and sci-fi settings.
The biggest compliment was when Robert said we are being gravely missed. The quality and general tone of the new releases was not well received by the players in his community and overall they just miss our ludicrous vein. Kudos to Robert for even sending us a token of the community appreciation. That's what we aim to achieve every single time. To touch the hearts and minds of the players.
While getting awards is great, I don't think its greater than this. You put a piece of your soul into a product, players love it. Then you leave and your absence is noticeable like a ton of bricks to the head.
While numbers in Excel sheets run the decision making instead of hearing what your target audience has to say about that, unfortunately, localisation will always be a footnote in a multimillion dollar pipeline.
I localised my first game 35 years ago, when localisation wasn't even a word, so it went from not being a word, to being a footnote in more than three decades. And while I'm the first to admit not all games depend on great localisation to be as good as designed... a whole lot of them do... a lot!
Anyway, to all of you out there looking for a truly old-school, yet out-of-the-box partner to make a splash in the portuguese markets...
Cue in Ghostbusters theme...
